Digital Mammography at SCCH:
Sullivan County Community Hospital is striving to provide the highest quality, most technologically advanced healthcare possible to its patients, and has recently added digital mammography to its Radiology department in order to continue this mission.
Digital mammography offers a number of advantages to women over the traditional mammogram. A digital mammogram delivers images to a computer so they can be electronically enhanced by the radiologist. It enables the doctor to zoom in, magnify and optimize different parts of the breast tissue using just four standard pictures. Readability and interpretation of the images are enhanced, so the physician can focus on areas of concern. In addition, these digital images can be stored on the computer and transferred throughout the patient’s care network.
Digital mammograms are generally recommended for women with dense breast tissue, breast implants, or for those who have had abnormalities in the past. Before SCCH installed its new digital mammography equipment, women of the Sullivan County area were referred to facilities outside of the county for their annual mammogram for these reasons. Now, they will be able to receive up-to-date imaging close to their home and workplace, in a comfortable environment.
A digital mammography exam generally takes about half of the time that a traditional mammogram would take. There is also less chance of being called to return and retake images. Results of the digital mammogram are instantly available, creating less anxiety for the patient.

In conjunction with the Sullivan County Community Hospital Foundation and cardiologist Dr. Emmanuel Favila, SCCH’s Radiology Department provides echocardiograms to student athletes in Sullivan County at no cost to the student. Athletes must at least be in the sixth grade, and reside in Sullivan County. Echocardiograms are used to detect certain congenital heart defects which may lead to problems when the student participates in sports activities. Appointments may be made by contacting the Radiology Department at (812) 268-4311, ext. 2281. A release form must be signed by a parent or guardian before the test may be performed.
